Jekyll Island

Looking back, I can’t imagine a better way to celebrate turning 50 than the trip Johnny planned to Jekyll Island. Instead of bringing the camper that first time, he made reservations to go glamping on Little Raccoon Key. After a short boat ride, we had the entire island to ourselves—well, ourselves and two raccoons. Having that kind of quiet and solitude made the milestone feel so special.

After two nights on the island, we returned to Jekyll and spent our days exploring. Driftwood Beach was unforgettable, with its weathered trees scattered along the shoreline, and we loved wandering the Historic and Beach Districts. One of the highlights was visiting the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. The behind-the-scenes tour gave us such an appreciation for the work they do to heal injured turtles and release them back into the wild.

Being campers, we couldn’t resist touring the campground while we were there. Since then, we’ve gone back to Jekyll Island with our camper a few times, and now that we’re retired, we look forward to making it a regular part of our travels.
